Doppler Scan

One of the main aims of routine antenatal care is to identify babies who are not thriving in the womb. It is possible that medical interventions might improve outcomes for these babies, if they can be identified. Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to detect the movement of blood in vessels. It is used in pregnancy to studyblood circulation in the baby, uterus and placenta. Using it in high-risk pregnancies, where there is concern about the baby's condition, shows benefits.

Uterine artery Doppler scans:

Uterine arteries are the vessels which carry blood to your womb (uterus). A uterine artery Doppler scan checks that enough blood is reaching your placenta.

Your baby needs plenty of nutrients and oxygen to grow at a healthy rate. Therefore, the walls of your uterine arteries should be stretchy, to allow as much blood through as possible. In pregnancy, these normally small arteries increase in size to allow more blood to reach your womb easily.

If blood can’t get through to the placenta easily enough, your baby may not get the nutrients and oxygen he needs via the umbilical cord.

There is a £20 surcharge for twins & multiple pregnancies due to the extra time required in the scan.

£20 deposit is required to confirm the booking.

What do I need to bring with me at my appointment?: Please bring along your hospital notes and reports.
How many Guests can come with me?: We are happy for family and friends to attend, however due to limitations in space and seating, we are able to accommodate up to 2 people with the patient.
Who will perform the scan?: All Obstetrics scans are performed by a highly experienced sonographer who worked at Unversity College London Hospital and Kings college Hospital Fetal Medicine Unit.
All of our sonographers are qualified with diagnostic obstetric and General ulltrasound scanning experience and work within the NHS alongside their role with Ultrasound Partners Ltd.
Do I still need to attend NHS appintments?: Yes, our services are a complementary service, which works alongside the NHS. Please note, our scans do not replace any of your NHS scans.
Would you advise me of any abnormalities?: During your appointment a general well-being check is performed on the baby, in an event of any abnormality being detected, we will discuss this with you and provide a full report for you to forward to your health practitioner.
